Ultra Violence's I Wanna Be Somebody

In my estimation, Ultra Violence's I Want to Be Somebody is one of the hardest, most under-appreciated NYHC anthems this side of Last Warning. While youtube/ live video is going to do it justice, I was psyched to find UV's performance of it at the A7 reunion on youtube. Tony and co are gigging again, so you NYC heads should make sure you catch them.

And for the love of god, Tommy Kennedy, where the hell are you?!?! Get in touch!!

Rapid Deployment Force on the tube, Urban Waste on the radio, Token Entry on a t-shirt

  • This one's been up on youtube for a few weeks and my attention was directed to it by a message board, so I won't pretend like I unearthed it, but it's certainly cool enough to share. File this in the "never thought something like this existed" category, it's a video of Rapid Deployment at CBGB's. (Someone should throw up an Anti-Warfare video next!!) Apparently, RDF drummer Phil is currently in the band the Blame and runs a recording studio too, so he's still at it. I've also heard, Rapid Deployment Force is playing a few more shows following the success of the A7 reunion show. Catch them if you're in the NYC area.

  • Check out some of the other youtube videos this fella (Phil from RDF perhaps?) has up, a couple of real gems up there including some New Rose footage and this one here of Victims of Society. Check out this show, with the people sitting down at tables.

Another cool V.O.S. video is here.

  • A mysterious "NYHC Archive" website has popped up on the interwebs in recent weeks. Eliminators, Hinkley's Fan Club, and the Influence flyers on the "coming soon" page are any indication, this'll be well worth some serious internet-procrastination time. A little legwork has led me to determine some good people are behind it, including folks who reissued the Vile LP and another guy who did that painfully under-appreciated Prowl 7" I'm so damn fond of.

  • Leading up to the aforementioned A7 show, Johnny and Kenny from Urban Waste went on WFMU accompanied by, amongst other folks, Wendy Eager and Paul Cripple from Reagan Youth. The ensuing show hosted by Diane Kamikaze is a mighty fine mix of NYHC tunes and some great interview/ commentary. Check it out here because it's archived for your listening pleasure.

  • Finally, for those of you into your NYHC merchandise, check out the Token Entry re-print shirts we did with Ernie and Timmy Chunks for their reunion show. Those sold out immediately at the show in Asbury Park this December, but we're printing up some more this January. Direct yourself to the MATW webstore if you want to snag one up.

unearthed Urban Waste photos! + Mach II 12"

  • Omid from Battletorn put out his latest release on Outlaw Recordings. It's a 12" by Clevo band Mach II which features Jamie Walters of Boulder/ Midnight fame, so you know it's quality. It'll be the band's debut output on vinyl and Omid opted to go for a "Livin' Easy" version of the record (as opposed to a "Die Hard" version). So what you get is a one-sided 12" with silk-screened covers, hand- numbered and labeled, with the band members' names etched into the B-Side. It's limited to 150 so pick that shit up stat if either of those two Cleveland shredders appeal to you. Contact Outlaw Recordings through their website.

  • John Dancy from Urban Waste recently found a bunch of photos from UW's heyday and the band posted them on their myspace page. This are some insane photos; I'll repost a few, but you'll want to direct yourself to the band's myspace page yourself to check them out. Now, if only they could come across a reel of unreleased songs recorded in 1982. Not likely to happen, but the pictures are pretty boss.

  • It's been an unfortunate while since I've posted anything in the way of interviews or anything like that on this blog. It's been busy times, but I'll hopefully have some stuff going up soon so check back from time to time.

    Borscht video.

  • My friend Wendy Eager of Guillotine recently told me she was very pleasantly surprised to have found a Borscht video on youtube. Borscht was always one of those real hard-to-find bands, that nevertheless some of the older heads talked rather fondly of, but I hadn't heard more but a few songs of. I had to see the video for myself. Some rather big coincidences here: first of all, Tim Broun (the good fellow with the blog here, and the guy responsible for helping get our MATW titles up on iTunes and all that) helped out with a digital transfer of the Borscht tape. The second, a rather sad one: Adam Nodelman was the bass player. Now, soon after Borscht Adam played for free jazz veterans Borbetomagus for a while, and played in Missing Foundation during their heyday. It was because of this that I knew him- on Hungry Eye we've been working on a Missing Foundation reissue for a whole bunch of years now. Adam jumped on board the project and was great to work with. He was a really passionate and interesting guy, and a lifelong musician, whose current band was Sunburned Hand of Man. He died at the end of August, just a few weeks before finding out he was in Borscht by finding this video. Had he still been alive, between mock ups and proofs of the Missing Foundation artwork, I'd have sent him an astonished email rapping about his old hardcore band! For now though, I can just pay tribute by sharing the video here:

  • On a lighter note, Wendy and Don of Guillotine have a new band they've been gigging around with called Sexual Suicide. Check them out!! Sexual Suicide's myspace
